W środę 3 kwietnia o godzinie 18:45 w sali 5.05 w budynku C11. Odbył się wykład z cyklu „Spotkania ze statystyką praktyczną”, zatytułowany „Abuses of Statistics in Finance & Social Science”. Wykład wygłosił Łukasz Prorokowski, członek AQMeN (The Applied Quantitative Methods Network).
The statistics underpins any research in social science – from medical experiments to empirical modeling in finance. The statistics provides points for discussion in the contemporary media, and hence constitutes one of the most often referenced yet least understood arts. Not surprisingly, researchers cannot avoid perils of the statistics. With this end in view, the lecture informs about ways of avoiding pit-falls in using advanced quantitative research methods. The lecture also delivers interesting examples of abusing the statistics by analyzing flawed research projects. We are living in a word dominated by the statistics. Whenever we turn to the media sources, we can hear about figures corresponding to accidents, death tolls, birth cohorts, unemployment, economy and any other interpretations of data. Hereto, the lecture focuses on the process of distorting quantitative information and mistakes at the inferential stage. Henceforth, the lecture touches on the issues of embracing responsibility during the data elaboration processes.
